I'm writing in a personal capacity at this stage,
but have no doubt that Camden UNISON's branch committee would endorse this
message of support to your association and NUT members at the STEM 6 'free'
school, where I understand members have voted for strike action against a
tyrannical regime of bullying, zero-hour contracts, and the drastic erosion of
pay and conditions.
It's heartening to know that members who might otherwise have been cowed into
submission are set to take bold and determined action to back up their
demands for union recognition and a major revision of the de facto zero-hours
contract.
I am also glad to see that the NUT nationally has endorsed strike action
on a sustained basis at STEM 6. Needless to say, I hope that your
members' strikes secure important local concessions, but also serve as a source
of inspiration to other teachers at a time when there seems to be so much
uncertainty about the prospects for the national dispute over Michael Gove's
seemingly endless attacks on teachers, school support staff and comprehensive
state education generally.
